2. Plitvice Lakes Paths, Croatia
The Croatian National Park Plitvice Lakes, which has been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage since 1979, is widely known for its sixteen cascading lakes and waterfalls. With the aim of bringing the forest eco system closer to visitors and promoting the natural values of the park, two educational recreation trails have been opened: the 9 km long "Plitvica" and the 21 km long "Corkova Uvala".
The paths are marked with hiking sign posts and arrows that have to be followed by the rules of the Park. With the help of local guides and information billboards that have been put up along the two paths, visitors are offered the possibility of getting to know the richness of the biological diversity of the National Park. 3. Bamboo Path, Japan
The Sagano Bamboo Grove is located in the Sagano Arashiyama area of Kyoto (about 25 minutes from central Kyoto). It is a beautiful forest with a path through its heart. The fences alongside of the paths are still made from the twigs of fallen bamboo stalks as used to be everywhere in Mainland Japan.
The walking paths that cut through the bamboo groves make for a nice walk or bicycle ride. The groves are particularly attractive when there is a light wind and the tall bamboo stalks sway gently back and forth. This is a recommended spot for photos and a quiet, still away from the tourist crowds. [link1, link2, map]

4. Tunnel of Love, Ukraine
One of the most beautiful tunnels in World can be found near the city of Klevan in Ukraine - The Tunnel of Love. This is in fact a train tunnel of trees. It's the main attraction in the area and also one of the most beautiful places in Ukraine.
During the warm months of the year the trees planted next to each other form a fairy green tunnel along one kilometer (0.6 mi) long section of the railway. Not a lot of people seem to know very much about the tunnel, or have ever heard of it at all, making it a well-kept secret. [link, map]

5. Ha'ikū Stairs, Hawaii
The Haʻikū Stairs is a steep hiking trail on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaii. This locally famous 3,922-step stairway ascends to the summit of the Koolau mountain range. The stairs climb 2,800 feet (850 m) up a nearly vertical cliff from the base of Haiku Valley to the summit of Puu Keahi a Kahoe.
The ascent is so steep that sometimes the stairs disappear behind the climber into the clouds that blanket the sharp peaks. That is why some call the Haiku Stairs the “Stairway to Heaven.” The hike is extremely popular because it is easily accessible, and a thrilling adventure for those who do not suffer from the fear of heights. 6. Santorini Path, Greece
In 1715, the island inhabitants built a rough path into the side of the sheer mountain so they could hike to the summit. Before long, donkeys were enlisted to help carry cargo and passengers to and from the ships and town. In 1930, the walkway was improved and more donkeys were added to aid in the assent and decent. Finally, in 1979, a cable car was installed to automate the process - but the most fun ride is still by donkey.

The zigzag walkway from sea to city is paved in stone, and because of the many switchbacks, the distance from one end to the other is 1300 meters or 4,265 feet. There are 657 four-inch (10 cm) tall steps on the walkway, and this natural stair-master provides a very good workout on a sunny day. [link, map]

7. Great Wall Path, China
China’s Great Wall no longer stretches along its 4,200-mile-length (6.700 km) that dated to the Ming Dynasty - some 30% has almost vanished. But the remaining sections — some within day trip access of Beijing - present walkers with varying states of preservation, from the overdeveloped Badaling portion with its museum, shops, and bathrooms to those wilder, dilapidated portions with no facilities.
One of the more authentic paths atop this serpentine wall wanders from Jinshanling to Simatai, a five-hour hike along mostly derelict ribbons encrusted with storied watchtowers and crenellated ramparts. Meandering over undulating peaks, the route often requires scrambling, sometimes on all fours, up and down tall decrepit stone steps and around gaping holes. But the sweeping vistas of the mostly forested hills, lush valleys and snake-like wall make the effort worth every step. [link, map]

8. The Dark Hedges, UK
This avenue of beech trees is known locally as "the dark hedges" are thought to be around 300 years old. There are over 100 beech trees which line the Bregagh Road which is near the village of Stranocum in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. They form an arc over the path and there have been concerns that some of the trees present a risk to path users because of their condition.
It is a much photographed scene and is a popular location for Northern Ireland photographers and international visitors. It has featured in the UK Landscape Photographer of the Year book in each of the first 4 years. Regrettably the character of the site has now been spoiled by the recent construction of a bright green sheep fence built inside the tree line

8 Lesser Known Crowded Islands From Around the World

When you think of islands, wide, pristine beaches and uninhabited jungles typically come to mind. These 8 lesser-known islands probably use to be like that once - but today, they have developed into entire towns. Islanders often have problems due to congestion in these settlements, and tourists from time to time come to enjoy the special charm of crowded islands...

1. Mexcaltitan, Mexico

link
Population: 818 inhabitants
Area: -
Mexcaltitán is a small island city off the Pacific coast of Mexico. The town sits low in the marshy, mangrove-lined channels that surround it, and during the June to October rainy season, water floods the streets and everyone rows from place to place in boats.
link
Some experts believe that Mexcaltitán may actually be the legendary Aztlán, the ancestral homeland of the Aztec people. Today it’s foremost a shrimping town, with shrimps spread out to dry on any available surface throughout the town. [link, map]

2. Ebeye Island, Marshall Islands
link
Population: 15 000 inhabitants
Area: 0,36 sq km (0.14 sq mi)
Ebeye is the most populous island of Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, as well as the center for Marshallese culture in the Ralik Chain of the archipelago. Over 50% of the population is estimated to be under the age of 18. It is the fifth most densely populated island in the world.
link
When the United States decided to test nuclear weapons in the South Pacific, they chose to do so amongst the atolls of the Marshall Islands. U.S. officials uprooted many residents from Bikini Atoll and Enewetak Atoll to insure that the testing did not directly harm human life. The relocated Marshallese had to move somewhere, and most moved to Ebeye under the assistance of the United States. This forced relocation caused a huge mess, including a severe housing shortage and land owner legality issues that persist today. The combination of factors created an environment of hostility and squalor, creating the slum of the South Pacific. [link1, link2, map]

3. Flores, Guatemala
link
Population: 13 700 inhabitants
Area: -
The Island of Flores is located on Lake Peten Itza in Guatemala. It was formerly called Tayasal. The Island is named after Cirilo Flores, one of the first Guatemaltecos to call for independence from the Colonial powers.
link
On the island is located homonymous town - Flores. This town is quiet small island town, but it is hosting lots of restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, handicraft and souvenir stores, Internet caffee’s, etc. Island is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The causeway connects Flores to the two surrounding towns which are home to most of the area’s population. The two neighboring towns are Santa Elena and San Benito both of which sit along the shores of Lake Peten Itza and service Flores. [link1, link2, map]

4. Santa Cruz del Islote, Colombia
link
Population: 1 247 inhabitants
Area: 0,1 sq km (0.04 sq mi)
The most densely populated island in the world is Santa Cruz del Islote, a microslum off the coast of Colombia. This tropical island is located in the emerald waters of the idyllic Caribbean, though is packed so tight that most activities are done off island.

link
The residents have to use neighboring islands as cemetery, recreation grounds, and the residents work on the mainland instead of on the island. Students from the island attend school on neighboring mainland. The Mucura Island Hotels are a prime source of work for the residents. [link, map]

5. Migingo Island, Kenya
link
Population: 130 inhabitants
Area: 0,02 sq km (0.008 sq mi)
Migingo is a tiny 2,000-square-metre (half-acre) island, about half the size of a football pitch in Lake Victoria. A rocky and rugged piece of land with little vegetation, Migingo is one of three small islands in close proximity.
link
In 2008–09 the island itself was claimed by both Kenya and Uganda. July 2009 a survey team found that the island is 510 metres (1,670 ft) east of the Kenya-Uganda border within the lake. The island has a population of about 130 (according to 2009 census), mostly fishermen and fish traders, who are served by four pubs and a pharmacy on the island. [link, map]

6. Fadiouth, Senegal
link
Population: 9 000 inhabitants
Area: 0,15 sq km (0.06 sq mi)
Fadiouth is very densely populated town at the end of the Petite Côte (coast) of Senegal, south-east of Dakar. It is perched on homonymous island that's made almost entirely of clam shells. The island is accessible by a narrow wood bridge which is only accessible to pedestrians.
link
This town was predominantly Catholic but now also has a small Muslim community. The major economic activities for the villagers of Fadiouth are fishing and rice cultivation. Since the town is located in a large river delta, farmers have taken advantage of the shallow flood plain caused by the river to grow rice in the area. [link, map]

7. Lindau, Germany
link
Population: 3 000 inhabitants
Area: 0,68 sq km (0.26 sq mi)
Lindau is a Bavarian town and an island on the eastern side of Lake Constance, the Bodensee. The historic city of Lindau is located on an 0.68-square-kilometre island which is connected with the mainland by a road bridge and the causeway of the railway to Lindau station.
link
Lindau is located near the meeting point of the Austrian, German and Swiss borders. It is popular with sightseers and holidaymakers for its medieval city centre and pleasant location on Lake Constance. [link, map]

8. Isola dei Pescatori, Italy
link
Population: 50 inhabitants
Area: 0,034 sq km (0.013 sq mi)
Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island) is the most northerly of the three principal Borromean Islands in Lago Maggiore. With a population of about 50, it is the only one island to be inhabited all year round.
link
A narrow street running along its spine is joined by cobbled alleys to the promenade which encircles the island. The promenade is frequently flooded and the houses built against it are constructed to allow for this. While the traditional occupation of fishing still exists, its picturesque charms has made tourism the most important source of income for the islanders.

9 Abandoned Islands Where Time Has Stopped

Some islands were used for military purposes, for the construction of individual buildings or for permanent settlements in which people lived for centuries. However, loss of strategic position, natural disasters, nuclear tests or simply wish to live in civilization, led to the abandonment of these islands. This is a list of abandoned islands, where time has stopped, where homes, buildings and streets standing untouched for decades.

1. Hirta, Scotland, UK
Abandoned village on the island of Hirta (in the picture can be seen a few renovated houses used by scientists) link
Hirta is the largest island in the St Kilda archipelago, on the western edge of Scotland. This island may have been permanently inhabited for at least two millennia, the population probably never exceeding 180 (and certainly no more than 100 after 1851). The entire population was evacuated from Hirta in 1930, due to disease and outside influences.

Currently, temporary residents of this island are defence personnel, conservation workers, volunteers and scientists who spend time here during the summer months. [link, map]

2. Holland Island, Maryland, USA
Island in 2008 link
Holland Island is a marshy, rapidly-eroding island in the Chesapeake Bay, in Dorchester County, Maryland, west of Salisbury. The island was once inhabited by watermen and farmers, but has since been abandoned.
The last house on Holland Island in May 2010. This house fell into the bay in October 2010 link
By 1910, the island had about 360 residents, making it one of the largest inhabited islands in the Chesapeake Bay. The wind and tide began to seriously erode the west side of the island, where most of the houses were located, in 1914. This forced the inhabitants to move to the mainland. [link, map]

3. North Brother Island, New York, USA
Skeletons of abandoned Buildings and Docks on North Brother Island link
North Brother Island is an island in the East River situated between the Bronx and Riker's Island. Its companion, South Brother Island, is a short distance away. The island was uninhabited until 1885, when Riverside Hospital moved there from Blackwell's Island (now known as Roosevelt Island). Riverside Hospital was founded in the 1850s as the Smallpox Hospital to treat and isolate victims of that disease. Its mission eventually expanded to other quarantinable diseases. The hospital was closed around 1940.
The road between the abandoned buildings link
Now a bird sanctuary, the island is currently abandoned and off-limits to the public. Most of the original hospitals' buildings still stand, but are heavily deteriorated and in danger of collapse. A dense forest conceals the ruined hospital buildings, and from the 1980s through the early 2000s it supported one of the area's largest nesting colonies of Black-crowned Night Heron. However as of 2011 this species has abandoned the island, for unknown reasons. [link, map]

4. Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands
Welcome sign at the Enyu aristrip on Bikini Atoll, site of post-WWII nuclear bomb testing link
Bikini Atoll is an atoll, listed as a World Heritage Site, in the Micronesian Islands of the Pacific Ocean, part of Republic of the Marshall Islands. Humans have inhabited the atoll for at least 2,000 years. Bikini was visited by only a dozen or so ships before the establishment of the German colony of the Marshall Islands in 1885.

Between 1946 and 1958, twenty-three nuclear devices were detonated at Bikini Atoll. The Micronesian inhabitants, who numbered about 200 before the United States relocated them because of radiation, ate fish, shellfish, bananas, and coconuts. A large majority of the Bikinians were moved to Kili Island as part of their temporary homestead, but remain there today and receive compensation from the United States government for their survival. 5. Hashima Island, Japan
link
Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima, is one among 505 uninhabited islands in the Nagasaki Prefecture about 15 kilometers from Nagasaki itself. The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The island's most notable features are the abandoned concrete buildings and the sea wall surrounding it.

The island has been administered as part of Nagasaki city since 2005; it had previously been administered by the former town of Takashima. It is known for its coal mines and their operation during the industrialization of Japan. Mitsubishi bought the island in 1890 and began the project, the aim of which was retrieving coal from undersea mines. [link, map]

6. Great Blasket Island, Ireland
Abandoned houses on Great Blasket Island link
Great Blasket is the principal island of the Blaskets, County Kerry, Ireland. The island was inhabited until 1953, when the Irish government decided that it could no longer guarantee the safety of the remaining population. It was the home of three noted Irish writers: Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin.
The view from the island link
Until 1953, the inhabitants of Great Blasket Island formed the most westerly settlement in Ireland. The small fishing community (even at its peak the population was hardly more than 150) mostly lived in primitive cottages perched on the relatively sheltered north-east shore. Today, the island was abandoned and sold to the state. [link, map]

7. Stroma, Scotland, UK
link
Stroma is an island off the northern coast of the Scottish mainland. Once populous, this uninhabited island is owned by a Caithness farmer who uses it to graze sheep. In the past Stroma had a population of about 550, which by 1901 had reduced to around 375. The population continued to decline through the 20th century, and most of the last residents left in the early 1960s to work on the construction of the Dounreay power station. The last two families left around 1962.
The school on Stroma, it is now used as a shed for shearing sheep link
The number of ruined houses shows how well populated the island was at one time. In the centre of the island is a church with a bell tower. Next to the church is the manse which is kept habitable for use by visiting shepherds, particularly at lambing time. Stroma is now a conservation area with an area fenced off to protect the rare plants from the sheep. [link, map]

8. Great Isaac Cay, Bahamas
Great Isaac Cay is a small Bahamian island located about 20 miles (32 km) of the Bimini Islands. It is accessible only by boat. The most prominent feature of the island is its lighthouse, which was erected in 1859, and stands about 151 feet (46 m) tall. In 1969 the island was abandoned by the two keepers who were guarding the lighthouse and other buildings.
The grounds are open to the public, although the lighthouse itself has had stairs removed to block access to the interior of that structure. The keepers’ house, cistern, and assorted buildings are crumbling into ruins. The derelict collection of abandoned buildings make Great Isaac Cay a popular destination for boaters. [map]

9. Pollepel Island, New York, USA
link
Pollepel Island is an island in the Hudson River. Also known as Pollopel Island and Bannerman Island, it is the site of Bannerman's Castle. This Island is about 50 miles (80 km) north of New York City and about 1,000 feet (300 m) from the Hudson River's eastern shore.
The ruins of Bannerman's castle link
The principal feature on the island is Bannerman's Castle, an abandoned military surplus warehouse. Today, the castle is property of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and is mostly in ruins. While the exterior walls still stand, all the internal floors and non-structural walls have since burned down. The island has been the victim of vandalism, trespass, neglect and decay
