Machu Picchu, Peru

Imagine being American explorer Hiram Bingham in the year 1911, trekking the dense jungle forests of Peru and then stumbling upon this lost, abandoned empire high on the mountain ridge overlooking the Urubamba Valley. Forgotten by the outside world for centuries and hidden from view by jungle overgrowth, the "Lost City of the Incas" languished in secrecy until Bingham brought the ancient ruins to international attention. The lack of written records has produced a wide range of theories on the site's significance. But refreshingly, unlike many of the mysterious places on our list, extraterrestrials don't figure in any of them.

Bingham suggested that Machu Picchu was the traditional birthplace of "virgins of the sun," chosen women who lived in temple convents under a vow of chastity who lived to serve the emperor. Modern theories postulate that Machu Picchu was an estate that belonged to the Inca emperor Pachacuti; that it was built exclusively to house gods and kings as a royal retreat; and that the site was chosen because it aligned with key astronomical events. A closer look at the silhouette of the mountain range behind Machu Picchu also shows us what a pair of spiritual Inca eyes would have seen: the face of the Inca looking upwards towards the sky, with the largest peak representing his nose.
